PORTFOLIO

It’s no secret that in the past, attempting to improve my SEO on WordPress was trying in every possible way: emotionally, physically, and financially.

When choosing your preferred domain, you’re choosing between two things:

https://www.searchenginejournal.com/seo-101/?p=12345.

To change your default permalink settings in WordPress, go to Settings > Permalinks .

If you’ve got the Yoast SEO plugin installed, implementing breadcrumbs can be done in less than 5 minutes.

7. Block Pages Using Your Robots.txt File.

Chances are that right now, you’re reading this while attempting to improve SEO on your WordPress website. Am I right?

I can’t tell you how many clients have reached out to me to run a technical audit on their site because it’s not ranking, but the only issue is a messed up robots.txt file.

When you start overloading your WordPress website with plugins, you bring all their baggage with them. Too many plugins can cause unnecessary code bloat, heavy markup, and non-semantic code that can cause a drop in page speed.

WordPress.org provides the ability to fully customize your themes, widgets, and plugins. It is open-source, self-hosted, and ideal for improving SEO. It’s the same platform used for the websites mentioned above.

When it comes to playing around with your robots.txt file, there is a line. And any SEO marketer knows that crossing that line feels like an 11-hour trip on a tequila train – a hot mess.

Are you looking for other ways to improve your WordPress SEO outside of Yoast?

While you may see a teeny tiny impact, it’s worth it to the user experience.

This is almost as bad as watching people apply too much self-tanner ( almost ).

Then, select Post Name as the option. Post Name typically works for most sites.

I’m not a psychic. I’ve just been in the same situation before.

2. Determine Your Preferred Domain.

If you’re a larger company with a lot of site traffic, you may want to opt for the www version of your preferred domain. With a www version, you can have a CNAME record to help redirect traffic for failovers.

Pop quiz! Which of the two URLs below is more readable?

If you’ve already got comments on your site, Google’s John Mueller says removing comments does impact rankings. You may want to keep them, depending on how spammy the comments are.

WordPress.com has limited storage, no FTP access, and is not ideal for SEO.

For those of you who get plugin happy and start installing plugin after plugin, please stop.

But while choosing an SEO-friendly theme for WordPress may be easy to overlook, having an SEO-friendly theme is vital for the success of your website.

Simply go to Yoast SEO > Search Appearance > Breadcrumbs > Enabled .

3. Change Your Permalink in WordPress.

Let’s set this record straight — there is no SEO benefit to having www or non-www when setting your preferred domain.

Also, keeping a clean and SEO-friendly URL structure may have a slight impact on your content.

I don’t use www on my personal website (https://annaleacrowe.com).

There are a few pages that you’ll most likely want to add to the disallow sections in your robots.txt file.

Let’s be real. When you’re choosing your WordPress theme, SEO is usually at the bottom.

Here are the pages I’d recommend reviewing:

Google’s John Mueller said on Twitter, “The SEO effect of keywords in the URL is minimal once the content is indexed.”

However, you can implement a custom structure depending on your preferences.

The beauty of WordPress is it automatically redirects the other version to the preferred version so that search engines and visitors can only access your site at the preferred domain.

For example, if the plugin spots that one of your pages is no longer ranking in the top three for its target keyword, it’ll tag it as “No longer well-performing” and give a personalized recommendation on how to improve based on your settings:

For a new website, it doesn’t really matter which version you choose. But if your pages are accessible at both URL versions, your best bet is to use the version with the most backlinks.

2. Set preferred domain.

Permalinks are basically the URL format for your posts and pages, and the “post name” option tends to be the most SEO-friendly because it helps:

To add alt text in WordPress, fill in the “alt text” field when uploading an image:

Make sure this is unchecked if you want to stand any chance of ranking whatsoever.

But with pages, you can create them with different levels using subfolders.

You should only allow Google to index pages that offer value to searchers. Tag pages and format-based archives rarely fall into this category, so it’s generally best practice to exclude them from indexing.

In this guide, we’ll cover 20 SEO best practices, share tips to help you rank higher, and explain how to implement them on your WordPress website.

9. Install Ahrefs’ SEO plugin.

You can also run the theme demo through PageSpeed Insights for a better sense of its performance.

This is not a free plugin but, in my opinion, it’s well worth the $49 price tag if you have the budget. If you’re looking for a free plugin that does something similar in terms of caching, try one of the many other caching plugins available.

Here’s the best way to structure that:

To see which version this is, plug them both into Ahrefs’ Batch Analysis tool and check their referring domains.

1. Check your search engine visibility settings.

For that reason, it’s important to write a compelling meta description that supports your title and further entices people to click.

Meta descriptions aren’t a direct Google ranking factor, but Google often uses them for the search result snippet.

domain.com/ services / domain.com/ services /seo/ domain.com/ services /ppc/ domain.com/ services /social-media-marketing/

If you’re struggling to write something that fits the bill, take inspiration from the SERP titles of the top-ranking pages for your target keyword, as these are often the same or similar to the page title. You can do that in Google, but it’s better to use our free SERP checker for more accurate, non-personalized results:

Enabling minification can lead to features breaking in some instances. So it’s always best to test how this affects your website in a staging environment before deploying live.
